There is a time when every myth is unveiled. This is what happened with the fiercest rivalry in Greek music – the eternal fight between Despina Vandi and Anna Vissi. As announced by Downtown magazine, the two divas of the Greek pop-folk met and talked to each other for the first time at the MAD Video Awards last Wednesday. Not only that they met and talked but they liked each other. According to music critics, now the road for a duet between Vandi and Vissi is open and the only other needed person is a talented and creative producer, who will record the most awaited collaboration in the modern Greek music.
A person, who is not familiar with the Greek music reality can ask himself, how is it possible for artists, who have never met each other, to hate each other so much? Well, it is possible. Both Anna Vissi and Despina Vandi started establishing themselves on the Greek music scene during the 90s. During the 80s Anna managed to stir the teenager’s enthusiasm about Greek pop-folk – style, which back then was believed to be second hand music by the youth. The Cypriot singer made few concerts in high schools and managed to make her husbands’ (Nikos Karavelas) music become one of the most listened to hit among the 18 year olds.
In 1996 Anna Vissi and Sakis Rouvas made an unseen for the standards of the Greek night life show in Chaos club, which established Vissi not only as a talented singer but also as one of the most emblematic artists on the Greek stage with her unforgettable presence. During that time, another name started to become famous – Despina Vandi, who showed all the necessary characteristics for an upcoming celebrity – talent, class, beauty, tenacity and desire for success. To the question whether she feels like the new Anna Vissi, Despina said: “Anna Vissi has been singing for 30 years. I am not even 30.” This remark was commented for many years – many believed that the young singer wanted to show some modesty and say that it was too soon for her to be compared with such a famous person but others believed that she wanted to put the withering Vissi down.
Whoever is right, the important thing is that this remark set the beginning of a series of spiteful pecking from both sides, imitating (the younger was imitating the older one of course), measuring success (whose is bigger), and so on from 1996 until today. Meanwhile, the two divas were avoiding a personal contact and only two times they happened to be at the same party but they did not cross each other’s roads. And so it was until the interesting night of MAD Video Awards, where suddenly both of them were too close to each other and they couldn’t avoid a meeting anymore.
