Olympiakos dropped out from the finals of the Champions cup

The game between the female water polo teams of Olympiakos and Kirisi – Russia ended with a final score of 11 – 12. With their loss from this evening the white and red team did not manage to qualify for the finals of Champions Cup. The game between the two teams was extremely difficult and did not give a chance to the hosts for a second game in Russia…

In the first 8 minutes the play of Olympiakos was tense and nervous. It had a problem with the attacks – the Greeks did not mange to finish 3 opportunities to score. They had an obvious problem with the side defense. In this way the Russians managed to take the lead twice and the change in the situation there was only at the last minutes when Olympiakos turned the score in its favor and the set ended with a score of 3-2.

During the second set the teams were fighting hard to take the lead in the result which was constantly passing from one team to the other. So the first half of the game ended with a score of 5-5 and left the two teams in agony.

The third set started with a loss on the part of Olympiakos. Along with this the tension in the pool definitely increased. The loosing position felt like a cold shower for the Greeks and they started new attacks. The points scored by the athletes Manolioudaki and Valkai event once again the score and it became 7-7. Then a penalty shot was performed by Andonakou which resulted in taking the lead by 1 point on the part of the Greeks. At the end of the set, however the Russians managed to score another goal and with this the result was 8-8 and the agony was again there.

The nerves of the white and red team were definitely tense. They started their last set with great pressure and mental tiredness. There were again problems in their defense. The Russians took advantage of this weakness and attacked the goal post. Glizina was the one who took the team ahead in the result. Olympiakos managed to catch up by a point of Kirisi and the result again reached the shocking 10-10 and … a draw.

The additional set which the teams had to play was the one which turned out to be decisive for the score – in spite of their attempts the Greeks did not mange to take the final lead in the score and so the game ended at 11-12 and their drop out of the quarterfinals.
