Olympic…Ghosts

Much has been written about the Olympic facilities and the defiant indifference of the public to their use.

There is no doubt that Greece is the worst evidence with regard to the post-Olympic legacy because most, if not all, Olympic facilities have been abandoned to their fate in recent years.

What were once freshly painted buildings with modern equipment, are now plundered and turned into dens of homeless people and drug addicts. The windows are broken, the doors are ripped, and the last vestiges of former glory are hidden by grass and junk.

The website zougla.gr reports on the fate of some of the facilities providing photographs of their inside area.

The Olympic Beach Volleyball Court

Especially revealing is the case of the Olympic beach volleyball court. Today, the way it looks evokes sadness and anger because it is in no way reminiscent of the glamorous moments the country experienced in 2004.

The playground has turned into a field with wild plants occupying every part of it.

Most of the windows are broken and the beach volley court is covered in grass.

The broken information board

The inside is in a far worse condition. Most of the doors have been broken and as a result the cables of some of the fridges (broken too) play the role of a… padlock.

The cabinets in different offices are also broken and plundered. Even the copper pipes found in some of the rooms have been stolen to be sold.

In addition, the walls have been damaged in many places and most of the metal surfaces are covered in dust.

The stolen pipes

The cherry on the cake is the fact that all the facilities of Palaio Faliro have been guarded (!) by a single employee of the security company.

The Sailing Centre is Collapsing

The Sailing Centre in Elliniko is in a similar state.

Most spectator seats have been broken, the outside area has been converted into a "parking lot" for the Coast Guard vessels and inside chaos reigns.

The spectator seats have been broken

The place has been plundered, the doors have been broken or they are…simply missing. Moreover, most of the windows are scattered on the ground as many homeless people have settled in the centre and turned it into something like a hotel.
