Marfin Investment Group’s president Andreas Vgenpoulos announced that on October 1 Olympic Air starts flying. In February this year MIG sealed a contract with the Greek government for purchasing the public air-carrier Olympic Airlines. As a result, Olympic Air management is hosting a grand-party at the Athenian airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” on October 15 in order to celebrate the launching of the new company.
As the company’s official announcement states, MIG made a €1bn worth of investment for renewing Olympic Air’s aircraft fleet. Currently it consists of 32 airplanes, 16 of which are Airbus 319 320, 10- Bombardier Q400, 5 Bombardiers Dash 100 and one ATR-42. From the moment the new company was announced it has received over 43 000 job applications. Over 17 000 people have been interviewed, of which 5 000 have been employed and currently working in Olympic Air flying company, in land services Olympic Handling and the technical support company Olympic Engineering.
Olympic Air will be operating 34 destinations in all parts of Greece, and also to London, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Belgrade, Sofia, Vienna, Bucharest, Milan, Rome, Istanbul, Larnaka, Beirut, Cairo, Alexandria, Tirana, Tel Aviv. Andreas Vgenopoulos announced that on October 1 the agreement between Olympic Air and Delta Airlines for joint flights to New York will be enacted, to which after the beginning of 2010 more destinations will be added. A similar agreement has been made with Air France for flights to France and Montreal in Canada. Joint flights will be performed also together with Etihad Airways to Abu Dhabi and South Africa.
Olympic Air will be a part of the world network of air-companies SKYTEAM, performing over 787 flights per day to 905 destinations in 169 countries.
