Local people knew about the existence of Diros cave since 1900, but could not imagine its indescribable beauty. In 1949, the founders of the Hellenic Speleological Society started exploring the cave and studied and mapped about 1,600 metres by 1960. Today, it is known that the cave is more than 15 km long.

The temperature in the interior of the cave is between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius and the water temperature does not exceed 14 degrees Celsius. The cave started to form hundreds of thousands of years ago, and the stalactites and stalagmites, which today can be seen below the surface of the sea, were formed when the sea level was much lower than today.

Diros cave can be visited by small boats and boatmen guide visitors through the cave and tell about its history. The boat passes a distance of about 1,200 metres by the lake, while the travelling distance by land is no more than 300 metres. The total duration of the visit is about 40-45 minutes. The Neolithic Museum of Diros is located next to the cave and visitors can see exhibits of inestimable historical value from the Palaeolithic era.

For your stay in the area, choose the impressive Kirime Hotel located by Gerolimena Lake in the Mani region.
