Nearly one in three Greeks states that he or she has never used a computer (34.4%) nor the Internet (36.3%).

The percentage of women who have never used the Internet (40.8%) exceeds that of men (35.9%). On the other hand, the percentage of regular Greek Internet users has steadily increased over the past years and at an accelerated pace, the result of this being that 81% use it almost daily. The PC remains the most popular device for Internet access (91.5% of users), and due to 3G technology and smartphones, access via mobile devices has recently reported a significant increase (18.7%).

These are the results of a survey conducted by the Observer for the Greek Information Society in 2013 in connection with the use of new technologies by the Greek citizens.

The survey shows that the percentage of people in Greece who buy goods or services for private use via the Internet is steadily increasing, the most popular categories being clothing, footwear and electronic devices. Following the trend in other European countries, Greeks prefer online shopping to local sellers, mainly due to the potentially lower prices. Greeks make between one and five purchases online a quarter, spending a total of up to 500 euro.

61.5% of respondents state they have Internet access at home and 37.5% that they do not. In terms of age groups, about 73.4% of people aged between 66 and 74 years and 57.3% of those aged between 55 and 65 years say they have no internet access at home. The lowest percentage without Internet access is reported among young people aged between 16 and 25 years (18.4%). 81% of Internet users go on-line every day or almost every day and 14% several times a week.

Obtaining information on goods and services (76.7%), emailing (74.6%), reading online newspapers and magazines (70.5%), entertainment (games, photos, music, movies - 63.9%) and dealing with social networks like Facebook (51.4%) are the five basic online activities of users.

With regard to online shopping, the main incentive for it is the lower prices in comparison with conventional shops (76%). Almost half of users (45%) pay for the ordered goods and services in cash (upon receiving them), 29% pay by credit card and 25% by prepaid card. 27.5% of online purchases are made through local online shops.

The majority of citizens believe that, due to the Internet, their relations with the state have improved (90%) and they are more actively involved in public affairs (88%). In terms of Internet safety, 60% say they have faced similar problems and 40% that they have not.

In terms of education, more than half of Greek schools (54%) already have their own website and 30% of pupils use a smartphone at school.
