On Vicente Calderón in Madrid the Spanish Atlético Madrid won a deserved victory with 2:0 against Panathinaikos and with a goal difference from the two games: 5-2, it ranked for the next level.

The host lead in the third minute when a long shot found Diego Forlán, who tried to send the ball back in the penalty area but it met Vintra's body and flew on Panathinaikos' net. Atlético continued to be the better team until the end of the game but it managed to score only one more goal, done by Sergio Agüero in the 83rd minute. Alone the Argentinean managed to break the Greek defense, enter the penalty area and with a precise kick won over the guardians of the guests.
Ten minutes before that Panathinaikos was left with a player less, after Djibril Cissé received a red card.
So now with a total score of 5-2 Atlético ranked for the groups in the Champions League. Panathinaikos dropped out because of a strong rival and now it will have to try its luck in UEFA European League.
