Panathinaikos coach fired

Day before his 56th birthday Henk ten Cate was removed from the bench of Panathinaikos. Appointed for a new head coach is Nikos Nioplias (former Ethnikis Elpidon coach) and appointed for assistant manager is Krzysztof Warzycha. The failed cooperation between the Dutch coach and president of Panathinaikos Nicolas Pateras, surprised both fans and the team itself.

At the bottom of Pateras’ unexpected decision are the unjustified expectations of the management and fans that the Dutchman will lead the team to win the championship. Although initially it did not seem unrealistic, expectations did not become reality. The image the team recently represented was not satisfactory and the true decline came after the last matches against Asteras Tripolis, Atromitos and Olympiakos.

As Henk ten Cate himself said during his last working day, it was an honor for him to work for Panathinaikos, and the results support its work. Despite the difficult times through which the team has passed, and although some are not satisfied with the overall picture, he considers his work successful and stresses that he and his associates have done everything they can in order for the team to succeed. The paths of the Greek team and its coach are separating, but Nicolas Pateras and Henk ten Cate remain in friendly relations.

The flirt between Nikos Nioplias and the green team started more than a year and a half ago, when he expressed a strong desire to become assistant coach of Henk ten Cate, but he refused.
