Panathinaikos' goals - works of art

100 years from the founding of the great Athenian football club, the greens - Panathinaikos, became reason for the exhibition of 80 young artists, who are inspired by the goals of the team. Maybe they were not passionately bouncing after a victory of the team or even they are not its fans, but the artists turned their canvases into football fields and scored 150 goals with precision - artworks on the occasion of the 100 Anniversary of the “Clovers” club.

Two years ago, 80 students from the Art Academy in Athens accepted the invitation of the President of the club Angelos Filipidis and took on the challenge to try their luck and make an exhibition for Panathinaikos’  "birthday".

"The biggest challenge was to avoid the clover and the green color. So with different means I painted the history of the football shoes," says for Ta Nea newspaper Dimitris Katsoudas who is in his fifth year in the Art Academy and is one of the nine artists who will share the second prize in the amount of € 1,000.

"I am not interested in football at all,” admits third-year student Dimitra Dimopoulou, who also received second prize. "But I took it as a game and as an opportunity to earn money and travel. But I did not like the idea of using the clover and the green color in my painting. And because I have nothing to do with the team, I decided to increase and thus to attribute to it something simpler: a ticket for Wembley."

"Women actively participated in this competition," said the rector of the academy Triandafilos Patraskidis and added that " other times we had also tried to do something together with other companies and organizations, but now for the first time we have so many people who participated and such good work quality."

Although the topic was specific, it did not come as difficult for the young artists. "Although I'm a fan of Olympiakos I looked at things from the artistic side," says forth-year George Sampsonidis. All paintings will be purchased by Angelos Filipidis and at the opening evening of the exhibition will be put for auction and the gathered money will go to the Panathinaikos fan club.
