Policy on refugees splits GRReporter readers

The bombings in Paris shook Europe. Numerous voices have been raised, stating that what is happening is the logical consequence of the lack of control by Europe on the refugee waves that are flooding the continent. The radicalized opinions for the immediate closure of borders have intensified, opposing the calls for humane attitude towards refugees. We asked your opinion, attitude and position on this pointed matter and asked you, "Should the refugee flood be associated with Islamic terrorism?". The question clearly divided the opinions of the readers of our three language pages, showing three very different viewpoints on the issue.

The majority of readers of GRReporter's Bulgarian page support the position that the link between refugees and terrorists is so obvious that it should lead to the immediate closure of European borders. 58% of respondents vote in favour of this option. More moderate is the position of 26%, who think that a stricter control is required to filter out the genuine refugees from those groups of radical Islamists who are using the current chaos to reach the richest countries in the EU. 12% of respondents are of the opinion that the measures are delayed, because many innocent people have already died in Paris and the sea. Only about 4% believe that Syrian refugees are fleeing the same extreme Islamists and that they should be helped.

The situation is different on the English page of our website. The first most popular options in the poll have 36% each. Some readers insist on the immediate closure of borders whereas the second group wants a stricter border crossing control. Compared with the Bulgarian page, a much larger group of readers believe that refugees from Syria are fleeing the same terrorists who are responsible for the attacks in Paris and therefore we must help them. 19% think that we should have a humane attitude towards refugees from Syria and treat them with compassion. 9% are of the opinion that the measures are delayed and the tragedies of drowned refugees and victims of terrorist acts are a sad fact that we cannot change.

Again, we have a totally different situation on the Greek page. 53% of respondents support the option of a stricter control to filter out people in trouble and terrorists. The percentage of those respondents who want the borders to be immediately closed is the lowest compared with the other two language pages, 24%. 18% express sympathy for the refugees from Syria and believe that they are victims of the same extreme Islamists who are at the core of the terrorist wave on the Old Continent. Only 6% believe that the measures are late in being taken because the victims among both refugees and civilians in France are a fact.

Our latest poll is turning your attention to a dispute provoked after the visit of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in Bulgaria. On this occasion, we ask you, "What do you think of the dispute between the Bulgarian state and the Ecumenical Patriarch?" Remember to justify your vote in the comments section below the poll.
