Magical beaches, creeks and rivers coming from the Saos mountain, and going straight into the sea. This wonderful place is inhabited by a lot of migratory birds and the Monachus monachus seals. Why don’t you follow their example too?
Beaches for All Tastes
Pahi Ammos is the most beautiful beach on the island and the only one covered with sand. Located in the southermost part of the island, the place is relatively easy to access if you follow the dirt road running from the village of Lakoma. Incidentally, this is the most visited beach.
An easily accessible beach is Kipon, covered with grit and overlooking the island of Imvros. You should also visit the beach of Kipi, a beach with small gray pebbles.
Chora
The village is 6 km away from the port of Kamariotissa. You will enjoy the view, for Chora is built like an amphitheatre at the foot of Saos mountain. Chora is the starting point of the paths going to Saos and the mount of Fengari.
The villages have beautiful tiled and coble-stone streets, with small two-storey houses clinging to each other. The houses are designed in such a way that they don’t hide the sun from one another. In the Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary you will see old icons and the skulls of the Five martyrs of Samothraki.
Springs for Connoisseurs
The famous Vatres springs are numerous springs rising from the mountain, forming a lot of small waterfalls, which in turn form large natural pools between the rocks.
Most famous are the springs of Tsivdoyani river near Therma, where the starting point for the ascent of Saos is. The largest creek of the island is Donias, with the highest waterfall of Klidosi, which is 35 m high.
The Sanctuary of the Great Gods
It is located at the north side of the island, west of the ancient city. The earliest religious activity dates back to the 7th century BC, and the buildings are from the first half of the 4th century BC and mainly from 3rd century BC. The sanctuary was built to express reverence to the great gods, mentioned by the name of Kabiri, as well as to hold the mysteries dedicated to them.
