A highly emotional scene was witnessed yesterday afternoon in the maternity ward of the hospital in Rhodes. The president of the Human Rights Committee of the Rhodes Bar Association, Pepi Papapavlou, walked into the room of an Eritrean refugee, accompanied by Sergeant Antonis Deliyorgis. Last Thursday, the sergeant had rescued the woman from her wrecked boat near Zephyros beach on the island of Rhodes. Her baby was born that same night.

The moment she saw the man to whom she owed her life and that of her child, the 26-year-old woman burst into tears. Then she thankfully said that her boy was going to share the name of his rescuer.

Mother and newborn are in good health, and the representation of the Red Cross on Rhodes is taking care of them. They will be accommodated in special housing on the island.

The young mother gave an account of her recent ordeal before coming to Greece. Just about to give birth, she travelled three weeks through the desert, on her way to Sudan from Eritrea. From Sudan she went to Turkey, and then sat on board a wooden boat that crashed into rocks near Zephyros beach on the island of Rhodes.

Hundreds of thousands of people from Africa and Asia seek refuge in Europe from disasters and armed conflicts. What kind of policy should the EU adopt towards them? Please give us your opinion in our poll.
