The refugee crisis in Europe has brought many problems, controversy and mixed reactions to what is happening on the continent. It turns out that different social groups in different countries are wavering between the extremes, from xenophobia to humanism, from accepting refugees without reservation to extreme hatred towards them. In addition to its demons, the crisis has given birth to its heroes too. A group of activists proposed that the residents of the Greek islands receive what is currently one of the most prestigious awards. In this connection we asked, "Do the native populations of the Greek islands deserve to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize?"At the time of writing this article, over 260,000 people have supported the petition, including GRReporter.
Bulgarian readers of our website are the most reserved compared with the readers of our other two language versions, regarding the merits of the inhabitants of the Greek islands. 46% of them believe that they absolutely deserve the Nobel Peace Prize as they save lives every day. According to about 30% of respondents, not all of the islanders have humane motives and some of them look to derive mainly commercial benefits. 15% of respondents are worried that such a prize will increase the refugee influx, which is why they think that it should not be awarded. 9% of our readers share the view that the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to almost everyone and it would be good to give it to the people who deserve it.
English-speaking readers express a greater support for the proposal to award the Nobel Peace Prize to the inhabitants of the Greek islands. 59% of respondents are of the opinion that the local populations deserve this award because they save lives every day. 15% of respondents are opposed because they fear an increased refugee influx. A further 15% do not see only humane motives in the actions of some people, which are associated with purely commercial interests. 10% believe that this time the prize may be awarded to people who actually deserve it, as previous laureates have devalued its importance.
Not surprisingly, Greek-speaking readers of our website support the most the nomination of their compatriots for the Nobel Peace Prize. 88% of all respondents have voted for them for their humane attitude towards refugees and for saving lives. 13% are of the opinion that, as the peace prize is awarded to almost everybody, it is time for people who actually deserve it to receive it. No reader opposes the nomination and expresses concern that this award will increase the refugee influx.
