“A priority of the government is the social and health policy” assured Prime Minister George Papandreou, who promised that in the next few months 1000 doctors and 300 nurses will be hired and there will be 77 new beds in the Emergency rooms in Greece.
The Prime Minister visited the Aticon hospital together with Minister of health and social solidarity Marilisa Xenogiannakopoulou and deputy minister Fotini Gennimata, because in the emergency room of the hospital were placed the first four new beds.
In the past few months as the swine flu pandemic created mass panic in Greece as the beds in the emergency rooms were not enough. As a respond to this need the Ministry of health and social solidarity announced that at first there will be 60 new beds, 35 of which will be placed in 9 hospitals before the end of the year and in the first ten days of the New Year another 42 will be placed in 12 hospitals around the country. In the second half of January another four beds will be placed in pediatric clinics.
According to statements of the Prime Minister next year hospitals will hire 1 000 new doctors and 3 000 people medical personnel. “Prime Minister proved he avoids saying the truth” commented Marios Salmas an expert in health care issues, member of the opposing party New democracy. He points that number of personnel was set out and approved by the New democracy government. The opposition has also some reserves whether the terms for placing the beds in the emergency rooms will be kept.
At the same time the number of the victims of H1N1 virus in Greece reached 62 people. On the death of 71 year old man, who had a chronic disease of the respiratory system, as well as 79 year old woman with heart disease was announced on Sunday evening. Death of a 57 years old overweight woman was announced on Christmas Eve. Two people infected by swine flu are in the emergency room – one of them 39 years old man with no other diseases and a 68 years old man with chronic disease of the kidneys.
