The Greek leather industry is facing a total collapse, as the first sales report for this year, which will soon end, confirms the union of leather manufacturers in Kastoria’s most gloomy forecasts of a few months ago that the crisis between Russia and Ukraine, the depreciation of the ruble and the international decline in commodity prices will have negative consequences on Greece’s leather exports.
The initial estimates of the leadership of the union of leather manufacturers in Kastoria, presented for newspaper "Naftemporiki" by president Iraklis Kalistenis and secretary general of the union Fedon Giatas, show that exports and sales of Greek leather in general will end the entire year 2014 with at least a 60% decrease compared with 2013, when exports of Greek leather decreased by 40% compared with the successful year 2012, when it is believed that the exports had amounted to 500 million euro.
