Theatre ENTROPIA launched its new international production ''P.I.G.S./Sotiria (or Salvation/Rescue)'' directed by Marilli Mastrantoni, which will be presented at Roes Theatre from 15 October to 21 October, as well as the exhibition "Save", which will be presented at the Pindaros Hotel. The project is the result of a study and stay in Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Belgium and Greece, in collaboration with local institutions and artists.
A performance with tangible actuality and humour as the main weapon
The acronym Ρ.Ι.G.S. comes from the initial letters of the following countries in English: Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain. Nowadays, it is used by certain circles of western analysts, investors and commentators as a concise manner of reference to the economically weaker countries of the Eurozone and has turned into a contemporary version of the historic, sociological phenomenon of the creation of negative national stereotypes in difficult times. Instead of condemning decisions or actions of specific individuals, it collectively devastates an entire country and everyone who belongs to a particular ethnic group is seen as representative of this stereotype. This particular acronym is the dangerous expression of this phenomenon - the dispute of human nature through the verbal violence of "dehumanization".
Using the term as a pretext, the performance represents in a playful and humorous manner reasonable questions about the maturity of our political culture, showing how the future vision of Europe challenges stereotypes of the past and explores the current economic, political and social crisis.
Playwright and director: Marilli Mastrantoni; set design and costumes: Thellis Karananos Alexandra Syafkou; music and video: Ais Zaglis; production: ENTROPIA; starring: Dimitris Drosos, Dakis Mavroudis, Vasya Paspali, Theodosia Savaki, Tsabika Fesaki, Don Christodoulou.
An exhibition for emergency salvation
Curated by Giorgos Tserionis, the exhibition "Save", which is included in the parallel programme of the Biennale of Athens, will be opened from Tuesday, 16 October, 8:00 p.m. to 29 October. Admission is free for visitors.
“Save” is about having security, being protected against injuries, accidents or other bad things; avoiding coming dangers or saving a house...
The participants in the exhibition have submitted a critical commentary upon the relation of the contemporary cultural and political scene in Greece with cracks in the perspective of modernity which once prompted the romantic request for a "total experience of Utopia," beyond the limited distance, overcoming space and time. Is this the end or the beginning of the nightmare - a nightmare of intimacy or perhaps the opening of new intimacy? Each answer is pending and the audience can seek its own contribution to the universe of paintings and find its homeland through this journey.
Participants: Andreas Vousouras, Lina Gaki, George Gizis, Babis Karalis, Georgia Κοtretsos, Villas Manolakou, Nikos Paleologos, Lia Petrou, Natassa Poulandza, Yiannis Sinioroglou, Konstantinos Stataios, Maria Tsangari, George Tserionis, Panos Famelis, Yiannis Christakos and Dionysis Christofilogiannis.
