Some time ago, we attributed everything to genetics, combined with a healthy dose of good luck. Scientific studies show, however, that we ourselves may also influence our own destiny, at least more than we have ever believed. In fact, a range of eating habits and tips on how to maintain a healthy life-style, live and sleep better can help us achieve a longer life of better quality.
Never too late to adopt a healthier lifestyle
Advanced age is not a reason to abandon healthy habits. A study carried out this year shows that exercising, proper eating and avoiding harmful habits like smoking have helped people over the age of 75 years to live up to 5.4 years longer than their peers who followed an unhealthier life-style.
Going in for sports really has an effect
It is well known that sport helps us live longer. But a recent study makes us pay more attention to regular exercising, if we want to prolong our days on the planet. Scientists have conducted an experiment that showed the numerical value of sports. The result, especially for dark skinned women, is quite motivating: Scientists estimated that every hour of exercise (swimming, running, etc.) grants these 11 hours additional life.
Preparing food at home
A study conducted in Taiwan among people over the age of 65 showed that those who cook food up to five times a week have a 47% chance to live 10 years longer. Of course, participants with chronic health problems were not able to cook or help prepare food at home. But even with these factors, researchers found that the preparation of even the most ordinary meal at home can prolong our lives.
Laugh more
According to part of the study of genes and aging, some features of our character are directly related to the duration of our lives. Laughter is among these. Therefore, laugh in order to live longer.
Optimism
According to the same study, optimism also plays a significant role in life prolongation. The 243 participants in the study aged over 95 years were optimistic, open and peaceful people. They considered laughter as an important part of their lives and had many friends. Moreover, they expressed their emotions openly, rather than hiding them deep inside.
Dietary supplements help
In a study investigating the intake of dietary supplements, researchers found that people aged between 60 and 80 years were 9% less likely to die during the three-year trial period in which they took vitamin D with calcium, compared to others who did not take these supplements. It is believed that specific food and nutrients also help us live longer. These include fatty acid omega - 3 and some antioxidants.
We know what to do, but we rarely do it
The most important things which can give us a longer and better life are no secret to anyone: Do not smoke, exercise, maintain a healthy weight and control blood pressure and cholesterol levels in your body. Although we almost daily hear these pieces of advice, researchers have found that few of us respect them. But the results of a study conducted in recent months may be a strong incentive: People who follow these "rules" are 51% less likely to die from any cause.
