Two people are dead and eight are missing after a collision between two ships, which resulted in the sinking of one of the vessels early on Monday morning. The sinking ship was found at the 78th mile southwest of the island of Sapienza, which is located in the area of Methoni in the southern part of the Peloponnese.
The German company Reederei Erwin Strahlmann is the owner of the ConSouth carrier, which sailed under the flag of Antigua-Barbuda and had a 16-member crew from Russia, Poland and the Philippines. It was sailing from Turkey to Malta and it was empty. It collided with another cargo ship (Piri Reis), which had a crew of 17 people, mostly of Syrian origin. Piri Reis was sailing under the flag of the Cook Islands and was transporting fertilizers from Aqaba to Ukraine. The investigating authorities first found only seven members of the crew of the second ship and then, the bodies of two more sailors.
The operations centre of the port authorities was informed about the incident at about seven o’clock in the morning. The search for the missing people involves four rescue boats, rescue teams of the port authorities, a C130 plane and a Sikorsky helicopter. Experts note that the weather conditions in the area were fine and it is not yet clear what had led to the collision. The investigation continues.
According to Merchant Marine Minister Kostas Mousouroulis, the incident was due to human error. The first investigation results show that during the collision, there was no man to follow the navigation of Piri Reis.
