José Antonio Villena Sierra is an external adviser for the trade agreement between the European Union and South American Countries. He has participated in over 40 Model United Nations around the world and is presently the Secretary General of the annual international conference SOFIMUN.  “The Sofia Model United Nations is unlike any other UN activities simulation around the world because it is meant for both young professionals of considerable experience in this field and for young people who are taking their first steps in the area. SOFIMUN is a gate to the realm of international relations and a stepping stone to a career in diplomacy,” said Jose soon after the opening of the seventh edition of the international conference.
There are participants from eighteen countries from three continents at the SOFIMUN youth conference this year. The participants’ age ranges from 16 to 30 and they all specialise in various professional spheres, but once in the meeting halls, they were quick to find a common language. Delegates were divided into three committees and on the first day of the meeting each of them presented to the other participants their country’s standpoint with regards to the discussed international relations issues. By the end of the week, the Security Council at SOFIMUN will debate issues related to possible military intervention in Ukraine and the crisis in Syria. The agenda of the second committee, the Economic and Social Council, includes topics such as possible drug substances legalisation and economic exploitation of the North Pole, while the third commission of human rights will discuss violation of human rights of immigrants along the Mediterranean EU border and the extent of legal limitations for wearing cultural and religious clothes.

''To be the best delegate or the best commission chairperson, one should be the first to come in the meeting hall and the last to leave the party the night before”, says Jose when asked about the successful delegate’s secret in the Model United Nations. As Secretary General of this year’s SOFIMUN he is enthusiastic about his work in organising the conference and gladly shares his experience as a diplomat with the future performers on the international stage. Jose hopes that this is his way to contribute to the world and its peaceful development, and inspire tomorrow’s leaders to fight for their ideals and the wellbeing of humankind.
