The well-known Greek filmmaker Theo Angelopoulos, whose films few people see and even fewer understand, remains out of the nominations for the state film awards this year. The Ministry of Culture was waiting till the last minute so that the elite director could finish his latest movie “Dust of Time”. The film was not completed and it was not included in the nominations of this year awards, traditionally given at the end of Thessaloniki Film Festival.
The news became a sensation because Angelopoulos is one of the “spoilt”filmmakers who always succeed in attaining state money for their movies regardless of the interest of the cinema-goers. Nevertheless, he is respected in elite film circles for being “Palm D’Or” winner for “Eternity and a Day” in Cannes in 1998 and “Silver Lion” winner for “Landscape in Mist” at Venice Film Festival in 1995. This year film production “Dust of Time” was late because of difficulties with subtitles for the three languages spoken in the film – Greek, Russian and German.
This year nominees for the Greek State Film Awards are Vasilis Miriantopoulos for “Just Separated”, Nikos Zapatinas for ‘Kiss of Life”, Andonis Kaloyannis and “For Now”. Who is grreporter.info’ s favourite this year? Of course for Nikou Perakis and his film "Cool."
