** Aris Velouchiotis is the legendary commander of the Greek People's Liberation Army, the armed branch of the National Liberation Front EAM, at the time of the German occupation of Greece during World War II. After the war, he opposed the decision of the party to cease military activity and returned to the mountains along with his armed followers, and the party excluded him for that reason.

*** The explosion in Kougi which is often referred to by Minister of Defence and leader of Independent Greeks Panos Kammenos is associated with an event of 1803. During the Ottoman siege of Souli, many of the residents surrendered, exhausted by lengthy hunger and deprivation. Monk Samuel and a number of his associates, however, refused to give up a gunpowder dump that was located in Agia Paraskevi chruch. When the people of Ali Pasha approached the entrance, the dump ignited spontaneously and the ammunitions exploded.
