The municipality of Ayia Napa in Cyprus is actively working to create an underwater museum of arts in the coastal area of Pernera. Yiannis Karousos, mayor of Ayia Napa, says the theme for the museum will be Greek mythology. This underwater gallery, which aims to become the first of its kind in Europe will enrich tourists’ experience and attract diving fans.
The first works and sculptures will be submerged in the early summer of 2015. The municipality has already approved the amount of 100,000 euro for the initial stage.
The process of submerging the sculptures will be in strict compliance with the regulations and requirements of the Barcelona Convention for protection of the marine environment in the Mediterranean. This means that sculptures will be located at appropriate spots defined by prior research. The materials to be used by the artists shall also be selected in consideration of the recommendations made by the competent bodies, and, above all, by the department of sea fishing - in order to avoid harmful impact on the coastal eco systems.
