An increasing number of Greeks are losing their jobs and the situation in the labour market is out of control. According to the Greek national agency ELSTAT, the unemployment rate reached 27% in February and recorded an increase of 0.3% compared to the previous month.
Most dramatic is the situation of young people at the age of up to 24 years, as the unemployment rate in this group reached 64.2%. A year earlier, it was 54.1%.
At present, the number of Greeks who have jobs is 3,568,186. The number of unemployed is 1,320,189 and of inactive people - 3,358,649.
The number of working people fell by 7.1% (270,766) compared to February 2012 and by 0.8% (28,650) compared to January 2013.
The number of unemployed increased by another 245,021 or 22.8% compared to the same period in 2012 and by 11,663 (0.8%) compared to the previous month.
According to statistics, 671 people in Greece remain unemployed every day.
The number of economically inactive people, i.e. people who are neither working nor looking for a job, fell by 2,287 (0.1%) compared to February 2012 and by 5,300 (0.2%) compared to January.
The highest unemployment rate is recorded in the areas of Thessaly, Central Greece, Epirus, Western Macedonia and Attica - 28.7%, and Macedonia and Thrace - 27.8%.
