The true battle between MIG president Andreas Vgenopoulos and foreign minister Dora Bakoyanni started today after the famous contractor lodged a claim for moral damages valued for €3 million. Few hours later the foreign minister answered with a claim of the same value and with the same accusations.
The war between Vgenopoulos and Bakoyanni started after the Foreign Ministry allowed the other big Greek airline – Aegean Air to serve daily flights to Istanbul. Until now only Olympic Air was flying to this destination from Athens. From Turkey, the only airline, which flies to Athens is Turkish Airlines.
According to an official statement from MIG, the amount won from the lawsuit will be given to Marfin Foundation for charity. “All of us working in Marfin have worked hard and in an honest way for many years, in order to create the biggest Greek group and we are proud of that. We will not allow to anyone to put our honor on the line,” also said the statement. Dora Bakoyanni said she will give the amount, if she wins the case to the homeless people of Athens municipality. She used to be the mayor for two mandates.
“Andreas Vgenopoulos is a representative of many powerful Greek and international capitals, who uses the pre-election period in order to achieve his goals. I refuse to play his game. This is business interests war, in which I will not participate,” said Dora Bakoyanni regarding Vgenopoulos’ accusations.
There is war between Olympic and Aegean on many fronts. The second Greek carrier reacted with unofficial note regarding the decision of the Ministry of Transportation to extend until November Olympic’s right to be the only airline flying to small Greek islands.
