Volleyball players of Greece utterly defeated the team of Latvia

With a score of 3-0 ended the game between the male volleyball of Latvia and Greece, played on the island of Crete. With their victory from tonight the Greek team took a step towards winning the second place of the second round of pre-qualification matches of the European Championship. The Greek team had not difficulties in defeating the guests. An exception was the first set, during which they won. The first place is already taken by England. If Greece manages to win the games with England and Finland on Saturday and Sunday they might well be hoping for the second place. Then follows a barrage with the teams of Turkey or Italy.

Volleyball players of Greece were in good mental and physical condition tonight. They were the ones who imposed the rhythm during most of the match. Their game was much stronger than it was during the previous meeting of the two teams in Latvia. Strong presence of the floor had the player of Aris Nikos Rumeliotis. With servings and nailing from up close to the net he won a great number of points for his team. So from the beginning of the meeting the score reached 13-6 in favor of the hosts. Greece had a very good attack and defense. Great block had the player Djuric. Lapas in turn showed very good uptake and distributions of the ball. Smaragdis completed the phases successfully. Thus the first set ended with the impressive score of 25-13, with which the hopes of Greece for success woke up.

The second set belonged to both teams. The guests however,had a great block that prevented the Greeks to complete the phases successfully. This blockade helped the Latvian volleyball players to feel mentally stronger and soon to pursue evening of the score. The change in the game of the guests definitely confuse the hosts. Very soon they began to make mistake after a mistake and thus they found themselves close to losing the set. A turn in the opposing team’s game saved them at the last minute. The Gurests also made a series of errors later on thanks to which the set ended in favor of Greece, although with the minimum difference of 29-27.

During the third set Iliyas Lapas was the one who revived the team of Greece. Active both during attacks and during the allocation he led the score to 20-13. From there on the next point and the victory were a matter of time... The set finished with a score of 25-17.
