American tycoon Warren Buffett and Italian millionaire Alessandro Proto bought the island of Agios Thomas in the Saronic Gulf, according to the press release of Proto Group Ltd, a real estate firm. According to the Athens News Agency, the deal was struck on Thursday and is priced at €15 million.
Alessandro Proto is a shareholder, along with Carlos Slim, in the New York Times. This is his third major real estate deal in partnership with Buffett. Buffett himself said: "There are many opportunities in Greece at present, and many people are willing to invest."
The island of Agios Thomas
The island is situated just opposite the island of Aegina and is part of the island group, which locals call diaporia. It can only be accessed by private vessel. The islands are known as a place for fishing, and also as a training area for the Navy. They are covered with dense wild vegetation, inhabited by hares, wild goats and bird species, including some rare sea ones.
Two days ago, the world media reported that Hollywood star Johnny Depp has also bought an island in Greece.
The actor has become the owner of the Stroggilo (which means round shaped) Island in the Aegean Sea against €4.2 mln. The uninhabited piece of land has an area of 0.2 square kilometres, wrote the Bulgarian Telegraphic Agency.
The deal was mediated by the same British real estate agency, which helped Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie buy an island in the Ionian Sea.
At the end of the month, the 52-year-old Depp, who is currently filming in Australia, is expected to visit Greece to have a look at his new property. The actor apparently has a soft spot for islands as in 2004 he bought a small piece of land in the Bahamas for $3.6 million.
Johnny Depp is an actor, director, musician, writer and producer, with three Academy Award nominations and a Golden Globe. In 2012, the Pirates of the Caribbean star was entered in the Guinness book as the highest-paid actor on the planet.
