Two out of every five say that they spend more money than they did last year. One out of every three (usually older) say nothing has changed and one in every four (45-54 years old) say they spend less. These are the main conclusions from a research done by Mastercard Barometer between July 1 and September 22, 2009.
People say that one of the main reasons they have stopped spending is price increases. Younger people – students, newlyweds, young parents, etc – say their needs have increased and they have more obligations. One out of every four, who say they spend less compared to last year, say they do it because their income decreased and they do not have enough means. Same reasons are mentioned by the surveyed, who are between 35 and 54 years old.
About 21% of the surveyed have credit or debit cards and most of them are men. The people between 35 and 44 years old use their card because of the “interest free” deposits. Other reasons are promotions, they don’t have to carry a lot of money with them and they can shop online but the main reason is the lack of cash.
Mainly women and elderly say they try to avoid using card, so that they can control what they spend and participants of the survey between 18 and 44 years old say they use card mostly when they don’t have cash, when there are promotions and when they shop online.
One out of every five Greeks say they plan to make a big purchase in the following 12 months and this percentages is the biggest among women and younger people. But those people say that for this purchase there are some prerequisites – good price and good payment conditions. This factor is the most important one in order for all to go and start shopping.
