While waiting for European help Greece is going in full speed towards the International Monetary Fund

Regardless of the fact that Greece hasn’t asked officially for financial help not from the European institution nor from the IMF, the question about who will support it on the way to the economic rehabilitation remains. The strict economic measures which the government of PASOK introduced very fast turned out to be insufficient in order to permanently convince the international markets that Greece can manage on its own to handle the financial collapse of the country. “We do not want to be in a situation in which we apply the strictest measures of the type IMF and not to have the support of the Euro zone. If the countries in the pact are not ready to support us then in case of need we will ask for the help of the International Monetary Fund. We are hoping that this won’t be necessary,” said the Prime Minister George Papandreou in a speech before the European parliament.

The indexes of the Athens stock exchange collapsed by 3,35 points after the publication of the financial issue Dow Jones Newswires. It quotes an anonymous governmental source from the part of Greece according to which Greece would ask for the financial support of the IMF in the beginning of April. This information was officially denied few hours later by the Minister of finance Georgious Papakonstantinou. Currently the attention of the financial analyzers is attracted by the meeting of the European Council on March 25 and 26, 2010. “It is of great importance that next week the European Commission reaches a more specific political agreement in the context of the European legislation to provide assistance if it is necessary,” says the commissionaire of the economic maters of the European Union Olli Rehn. The eventual entering of the country under the control of the IMF does no longer provoke strong reactions as it did several months ago. According to the chairman of the European Commission Jose – Manuel Barroso the question is  which is the best way to handle the situation.

The intense situation regarding “the Greek problem” caused a series of commotions and the spread of various scenarios. In the international press was published a suggestion for the creation of a joint plan for action which should include the joint efforts of the IMF and the European financial institutions. The extreme conservative analyzers in the Euro zone even suggested the idea that the countries who suffer from chronic disobedience and non performance of their obligations according to the Stability Pact could be expelled from the Euro zone.

While recently the French president Nicolas Sarkoszy stated that the Euro zone loses its purpose if it does not help one of the country members in a time of difficulties, he had in mind the European assistance for Greece. The representative of the German government Ulrich Wilhelm on the other side left opened the opportunity that Greece looks for help from the IMF if it cannot handle alone its own finances.
