The Winter Olympics fire is lit!

The Olympic flame is starting its long journey to the Canadian city Vancouver, where the winter Olympics “Vancouver 2010” will take place. At exactly 12:00PM Maria Navpliotou lid the Olympic fire during a simple ceremony in Hera in Olympia. Present at the ceremony was also chairman of the Olympic Committee Jacques Rogge.

The first sportman running with the fire in hand will be Vasilis Dimitriadis. “This will always be something very exciting for me. The emotions are so overwhelming that I feel extremely special. It is an honor for me and I know that I am the first of many people who will carry the Olympic fire to Vancouver,” said Mr. Dimitriadis for Eleftherotypia newspaper.

The fire will pass through Kalabrita (22.10), Karpenisi (23.10), Mechovo (24.10), Edessa (25.10), Thessaloniki (26.10), Volos (27.10) and its last stop in Greece will be at the Acropolic on October 28.

The Olympic fire run throughout Greece will take eight days and it will cover territory of 2180km and 36 fire ceremonies will take place in different churches and two landmarks.

The fire will officially be given to the Canadians next Thursday at an official ceremony on the Athenian Stadium at 06:00PM by Niki Georgiadou, who I studying in Toronto.
