Winter sales in shops throughout the country will begin on Monday, January 12, and will continue until 28 February.
As stated in a message of the Hellenic Consumers’ Association, both retailers and consumers have to be aware that the indication of the two prices of the product is obligatory, i.e. the regular price (usually stricken through) and the new price of the items after the discount.
According to the Association, the upcoming sales "are critical to thousands of companies that expect demand to revive in order to avoid the undesirable effects of the current stagnation. On the other hand, consumers will try to make the most of the best prices of the goods they actually need. Retailers will try to attract consumers with high discount rates in order to change the weak activity in the market, albeit temporary."
On occasion of the upcoming winter sales, the Hellenic Consumers’ Association advises consumers the following:
- To rate their purchases according to their means and the actual needs of the household.
- To thoroughly compare goods prices and quality, especially before the start of the sales in order to establish whether a discount is really offered.
- To make a list of the needed goods.
- To distinguish between "I want" and "I need".
- To not buy in haste, as consumers with rational purchasing behaviour will benefit the most.
- To not hurry because sales will continue until 28 February and to choose the goods that are necessary for their household with caution.
- To be informed of changes in the goods they buy during the sales period.
- To always request a receipt, because on the one hand, it proves the purchase in the case of a defective product and helps avoid tax evasion on the other.
- To ask for complete and accurate information when buying something in instalments.
- To report to the General Consumer Secretariat (tel. 1520) any irregularities established if there are specific data on misleading and fictitious reductions.
