A court of mixed composition will hear 13 guards from Nigrita prison who are accused in the murder case of recidivist of Albanian origin Ilia Kareli this April.
42-year-old Kareli was moved to Nigrita after having killed guard George Tsironis in Agrinio prison a week earlier. Two days later the recidivist was already dead, and photos from the recording cameras in the prison did not leave any doubt about who committed the murder.
The photos show that Kareli was beaten to death by the guards. Initially, 15 prison officers were defendants in the case but the investigation brought accusations against 13 of them. They will be on trial for extremely severe torture that caused the death of the victim.
The former director of the prison, who is accused of concealing criminals, will sit in the dock together with the prison officers.
Six of the guards were sent to custody immediately after the first interrogation in connection with the murder. The judicial council of Serres rejected their request to be released until the trial.
