The Athenian court ruled a sentence of 20 years and 10 months in prison for David Moudzikneli, the Georgian who murdered the famous Greek actor Nikos Sergianopulos on June 4th last year. The court unanimously found him guilty on charges of premeditative murder under normal psychological condition, illegal weapon use and illegal entry in the country. The robbery charges were changed to larceny.
With majority of 4 against 3 votes the court pronounced the Georgian clean past as an extenuating circumstances. Three jury members and one judge have voted “for” accepting the extenuating circumstances and according to them the defendant was supposed to be charged with murder and 12 years in prison. The lawyers of the defendant said that they will file an appeal.
On November 5 the Athens court prosecutor Ifigenia Gaki asked for a 20 years and 19 months sentence in prison and not taking into consideration the extenuating circumstances. She defended her proposal by calling the way the actor was killed “beastly”. According to Mrs. Gaki the claims of the defense that the defendant met the actor the day he died, are untrue. According to gathered data the victims and the defendant did not have an argument. Also the defendant acted under the influence of alcohol. When it comes to the motive the prosecutor said that the defendant wanted to win as much as he can from the victim and this is why he stole a laptop, mobile phone and €100.
Nikos Sergianopoulos is famous from many Greek sitcoms. The good actor skills and his charm won him many fans. His cruel murder became a reason for all of them to ask for maximum sentence.
