The tradition to celebrate Easter with fireworks and shootings takes its victims each year in Greece. This year however the balance is unexpectedly tragic – four people are dead and over ten people are injured. The ban for creating hand made fireworks was avoided by many people and the most often victims are young people.
In Iraclio on the island of Crete the firework which he made on his own blows up in the hands of a 17 years old boy and tears his right hand. The boy passed out on the way to the hospital. On the island of Santorini another boy at the age of 21 was making fireworks in the basement of his house together with a friend of his at the same age. The fireworks caught on fire under unknown circumstances and the boy lost his life, while his friend might loose his right eye. 25 years old young man was shot by accident from his cousin with a hunting gun during the shootings celebrating Easter.
The blood tax on the Greek roads was also heavy. Only since Good Friday until the Sunday of Easter in the country there were 28 bad traffic accidents out of which 31 people lost their lives and 535 are injured. As a comparison – for the same period last year there were 38 traffic accidents in which 40 people lost their lives. There were also victims in Athens. The deserted streets and the big quantities of alcohol which go together with the festive table predispose the people for driving with high speed and they are a good reason for the traffic accidents. On the territory of the Greek capital there were 154 traffic accidents in which 5 people died and over 170 were injured.
