A powerful earthquake woke up Athens at 4:09 am today. According to the Geodynamic Institute at the National Observatory of Athens, the epicentre was 26 km northwest of Halkida, the main city of the island of Euboea, and at a depth of only 5 km, which was why the quake was intensively felt, despite its short duration.
The Geodynamic Institute ensured that the post-seismic activity was normal, with numerous quakes in the range of 3 degrees on the Richter scale at a depth of about 10 km. Earlier that night, at 1:20 am, it had registered another earthquake of 4 degrees on the Richter scale, its epicentre being in the sea, 119 km south of Crete.
So far, there have been no reports of casualties or damage. Fire engines patrolled Halkida and the area immediately after the earthquake to assist the needy.
Director of the Geodynamic Institute Akis Tseletis assured that scientists were closely monitoring the phenomenon but could not say with certainty, at least so far, that it was the major earthquake. "I hope that this was the primary earthquake and that there will be no stronger quake but I cannot say anything at present. The VAN Group had been warning about the possibilities of a powerful earthquake in the Athens area for some time and therefore, the Geodynamic Institute was on high alert. We are carefully observing the development of seismic activity," he said.
Seismologist from Athens University Efthimios Lekas claims that scientists are aware of the particular seismic focus that can cause quakes of up to 5.5 degrees on the Richter scale and aftershocks that will not exceed 4.7 degree on the same scale.
