Elections within the party of PASOK for choosing a new party leader will be held on Sunday March 18th, in 768 polling centers in which 1,074 polling stations will be created. They will be approved by the Commission on the statutes and certification of PASOK during its meeting today undr the leadership of George Anomeritis and in the presence of its members Lilika Vasilakou, Yiota Ghazi, George eDolios, Maria Papageorgiou and Kostas Triandafilou.

The Commission will also approve the members of election committees, which will perform the election procedures.

The members of these committees include members of the Coordinating Committees of local organizations in the country, but also members of the Coordinating Committees of the regional committees will participate.

Moreover, starting with today the Commission on the statutes will meet continuously and it will monitor the electoral process, announcing the first results immediately upon receipt from the electronic system of 25% of the ballots.

Given his resignation from the leadership post George Papandreou will hold their last meeting in his capacity of President of PASOK in the afternoon  with Prime Minister Lucas Papademos.

The fact that there is only one candidate - Evangelos Venizelos - may limit interest in the election results, but senior party members did not hide their concerns.

The reasons for their concerns are related to whether the electoral process will proceed normally without violent reactions and disturbances caused by other parties, as well as whether participation in the elections will be satisfactory.

For these reasons, since Friday efforts have been made, that will continue today, to mobilize as many party members as possible.

As to the first concern, local organizations have tried as much as possible to reach an agreement with other parties and political formations, so that there will be no acts of violence and disturbances with catcalls of certain members of PASOK.

Regarding the participation in the elections, which will probably be the most important parameter of the procedure, members of PASOK hope that on the basis of this participation they will be able to make some initial conclusions about the mobilization of the party electorate.

Senior party members avoid making official estimates, although unofficial estimates were heard, according to which the number of people who will go to the polls will exceed 50,000.

It is believed that after the voting, which begins at 9 am on Sunday and will end at 5 pm, the result will be clear fairly early, given that there are no other candidates for party leader apart from Evangelos Venizelos.
