An 85-year-old man from a village in western Fthiotida is accused of repeatedly molesting a 5-year-old child over the past six months, according to the Athens news agency AMNA.

The indictment states the man lived together, and had sexual relations, with a 60-year-old Bulgarian woman who is the girl’s grandmother. On Monday morning, they brought the child to Lamia hospital as she complained of "pains in the genitals."

During the examination, the grandmother and the child described before the doctors how the 85-year-old man had molested her. They told of the same things to the police representatives who arrived at the hospital having been informed by the staff.

The man was in the same room and fainted while the grandmother and the girl described how he had molested her.

In his subsequent testimony before the authorities he denied the charges and said he was a victim of extortion. According to him, the 60-year-old Bulgarian woman wanted money from him but he had no money to give her.

In her report, the child psychologist who examined the 5-year-old girl states that she has been abused for at least six months. The gynaecologist of Lamia hospital however indicates in his report that he has found no evidence of rape.

The child has been transported to Athens to undergo further examinations. It is expected that the 85-year-old man will testify before the prosecutor in Lamia later today.

In statements to Star Kentrikis Elladas TV, Dimitris Kroupis, defender for the detained, said that his client is a victim of financial extortion.

"There are data that refute the claims of the counterparty. Of course, I cannot present them to you," he said. At the same time, he avoided answering the question as to what his client had told him by saying, "Such cases are obscure. We cannot base our arguments on the testimony of a 5-year-old child nor on the words of the grandmother who is repeating the child’s words. Such cases are difficult."

The defender remained silent with respect to whether his 85-year-old client had had a sexual relationship with the 60-year-old Bulgarian woman. "The time has not yet come to announce these things," was his comment.
