After Georgios Papandreou was elected for Prime Minister of Greece, all attention went to his other half – his wife Ada Papandreou. Her presence is discreet but still attracts attentions in her own way.
Ada Papandreou is not the regular wife of a first class politician, comments the Greek press. At a first glance – you will never notice her because of a brand handbag, which “picks” your eyes out. She has shopped at boutiques on ArgiropoulouStreet, which import high fashion collections for every season, only few times. You can most often see her in Zara in Kifisia neighborhood and during her visit to the International Thessaloniki Fair this year she did not wear any jewelry – on purpose or not, wondered journalists.
Ada herself likes talking about literature, cinema and music. Her closest friends and preferred company, remain to be her classmates from Patra, where she was born in the family of the known lawyer Papapanou – PASOK member. Ada likes drinking her morning coffee with them or with her mother, when she comes to visit in Athens.
One of her friends is also the reason Ada met Georgios Papandreou. Family friend invites Ada at a Georgios Papandreou introduction and despite what Ada herself said in an interview together with her husband for Tahidromos magazine in 2000, a bit after her first meeting with Georgios Papandreou, the chemistry between them was stronger than her initial prejudice. She meets his parents and their marriage soon comes in 1989. Few years later their daughter Margarita-Elena is born, who is 19 years old right now and is Biology major in a university in London. Recently Ada travels to London frequently, in order to see her daughter. They like to talk, shop and go to museums and cinema.
Even though she had studied aeronautics in Canada and has worked for Olympic for a long time, after her husband was chosen for PASOK leader, Ada left her career and decided to stand behind her husband. The only thing she lets herself do is to graduate a second master’s degree in French philology. This takes her down the academia path and now except for her first lady duties, she is working hard on her doctorate degree in literature in the Sorbonne. Rumors have it that Georgios and Ada Papandreou’s relationship had remained through the years thanks to the tranquility in the family. Close friends to the family share that “only Ada can take his worries away…”
