After several hours-worth of thriller, Adonis Georgiadis will finally be able to run for president of New Democracy.
Last night, the Central electoral Committee of the party unanimously decided that his nomination was invalid because it was turned in after the deadline had expired - by just a few minutes. Georgiadis, who afterwards went to the headquarters of the party, said he had learnt about the rejection of his candidacy from the journalists and maintained he would make an appeal against the commission's decision. He added that two other candidates - Dzidzikostas and Meimarakis – had informed him that they wished to see him among the candidates. The fourth candidate, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, also twittered his disagreement with the decision of the electoral commission.
In an interview with SKAI TV, Evangelos Meimarakis directly trashed the electoral commission's chairman, Andreas Papamikos, for having acted on his own. The current New Democracy leader said Georgiadis' nomination must be accepted and that it would be a mistake to turn him down for a delay of a few minutes.
Former prime minister Antonis Samaras was also adamantly against the rejection of Georgiadis. "This decision is unwarranted, wrong and traumatic for New Democracy. I hope they amend it immediately," he said.
Dora Bakoyannis also twittered her response where she said: "It is a mistake, Mr. Papamikos and committee members. If you cut Adonis Georgiadis on the basis of 6 minutes, you damage the process. I hope you pay heed to my appeal."
This morning the committee met again and accepted Georgiadis' objection, hence he will run in the leadership contest along with Evangelos Meimarakis, Apostolos Dzidzikostas and Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
