Airplane pilot blinded by a laser pointer

Rhodes Island police arrested two kids at the age of 13 and 14 who were using a laser pointer to blind the pilot of Aleksandroupoli-Rhodes line airplane. Because of the laser, the pilot could not land the airplane from the first time. The police have captured the children, as well as their parents.

Only a week ago a 16-year old child tried to blind another pilot with the same laser pointer. The adolescent was held after the pilot made a complaint to the chief of "Nikos Kazadzakis" airport on Crete. The mother of the kid was also taken into custody because of neglecting her child.

In the USA blinding with a laser pointer may be seen as terrorism. A popular case is the one of an American who was showing the stars to his 7-year old daughter days before New Year eve, on December 29, when he accidentally blinded the pilot and co-pilot of a 6-seated "Cessna" charter airplane, landing in the nearby Teterboro airport. Luckily, the pilots managed to land the plane without any problems. The father, however, had to pay a fine of thousands of dollars and spend several years in prison. He is considered lucky that he was not accused in "terrorism".

Since a laser pointer is not that hard to purchase, anybody can use it for different purposes. To show, for example, to his/her son who is Enzo Maresca while Olympiakos is playing for the UEFA champions cup. The players are complaining of the rays pointed at them during soccer or basketball games.
