The warders in Greek prisons will not work during the visits of prisoners’ relatives to all Greek prisons from today to Sunday, 30 March. The decision has been taken by the management board of the Federation of Correctional Personnel Unions in Greece as a sign of mourning and protest in connection with the murder of their colleague George Tsironis, aged 46, by a recidivist of Albanian origin in Malandrino prison.
The criminal, who is sentenced to life imprisonment, stabbed the warder with a handmade weapon on Tuesday afternoon. The warder, who is the father of three children, died while being transported to the hospital in Amfissa.
According to sources, the Albanian had attacked him because his application to obtain leave from prison had been rejected. He had even said, "You do not let me go to see my mother. One of you will pay for this."
The Federation states that the visits of prisoners’ defenders, their transportation to court or hospital for scheduled medical examination and all other internal procedures will be carried out normally.
Minister of Justice Charalambous Athanasiou expressed his condolences to the family of the murdered warder. As for the responses to the bill of the Ministry, which provides for changes to the system and for the creation of a prison with the highest security level, the Minister stressed that its goal is to establish the rule of law without concessions and compromises.
Special units of the Greek police have been sent to Malandrino prison to search all cells today and find other hidden handmade weapons.
