This is the end. This man is more than flesh and blood can bear. He tells myths and legends with incredible ease, and charms and deceives without shame. His name should be not Alexis Tsipras but Alexis Munchausen. He has overshadowed the most famous narrator of fictional stories and liar of all time. However, having found supporters, this is good for him!
And all this served with a large dose of arrogance. His television interview yesterday that gave an idea of what we would hear during the upcoming election period is indicative. What things did the incredible former prime minister say! He said he was proud of the referendum! With the largest political fraud ever committed in the country! He shamelessly keeps on lying that he has achieved relief and concessions with the referendum "no"! Actually, he said he was proud of having signed the worst agreement for the country that could have been achieved - an agreement that is very difficult to implement too. Moreover, he is personally responsible for the terrible course of these catastrophic negotiations.
He pretends to be uncompromising, for God’s sake, an opponent of memoranda! Now he comes out, on top of that saying that not only does he not believe in this agreement, not only does he not accept it but he refuses any alliance for its implementation. He is blackmailing for an independent government, rejecting any cooperation after the elections. He is so self-confident and so strongly believes in the power and vigour of the lies that he tells citizens that he says he will not participate in the next government if it is not independent, considering this a powerful weapon of political blackmailing.
During the interview he was slightly reminiscent of old Greek dramatic cinema by replying, "I have decided not to become a hero for a short while but to prevent an unprecedented catastrophe for the masses, for the working people, for those who have put their money in Greek banks." Those banks that he himself closed, imposing restrictions on transactions!
And of course, he did not forget to tell more lies, the most typical of which being that of the possible rapid exit from the memorandum and custody and that "within a year we will have finished and we will continue according to our plan for productive recovery." Because, as he said, his memorandum was different from other memoranda that were focused on austerity measures. His memorandum was ... a memorandum of development. God forbid!
Unfortunately, we have got into in a much worse muddle than that which many thought would befall us because of Mr. Tsipras and company taking power. The time has come for the people to assume their responsibility too. To consider soberly and maturely what kind of government in that country they want the day after the elections, if they really believe that they should give Mr. Tsipras another chance. Or rather a third chance because they gave him the second one with the referendum and he threw into the dustbin the will of Greek people. Because very simply, he was aware from the beginning that he had no room for manoeuvres, having pushed the negotiations to that state and having been pressed against the wall. But he wanted to receive a resounding "no" to use it as a personal vote of confidence. Not in favour of the country but in his own favour. For his own political survival. To be able to come out now and talk nonsense while some are listening to him in a state of exaltation...
Since the announcement of early elections, one can feel in the statements of foreign leaders the support for "the person who accepts and pushes everything". However, they are not interested in the future of the Greek people. They no longer care whether the Greek government, whatever it is, will be able to implement the agreement. They have fulfilled their moral duty. They have shown solidarity with Greece. They have signed a new bailout. Now, if the country does not manage, this is no longer their problem. Moreover, their adamant behaviour during the negotiations showed their anxiety about the threats of a catastrophe in Europe due to a possible exit of Greece from the euro zone.
So let the wise Greek people assume their responsibility. They are called that way during each election race, aren’t they? Well, then, let them show their wisdom. But let us not take the big basket. Economic collapse and policy vulgarizing are always preceded by social and cultural downfall.
