Alien made in Greece

Following the disclosures of a group that was drawing up a plan for exiting the euro zone and returning to the national currency under the guidance of former Minister of Finance Yanis Varoufakis, the Greek public is awaiting the court action against him. Today GRReporter presents his portrait written by writer and journalist Takis Theodoropoulos for the newspaper Kathimerini.

He appeared out of nowhere in the depressing landscape of the Greek crisis. He stood out with his shaved head, the expensive but casual attire and his physique of a Roman gladiator, riding a powerful motorcycle. He was not like any of his interlocutors, even before he ended up among the gray suits of the councils of ministers. He was distinguished as a preacher of the Apocalypse. He was talking a lot or to be precise, he was constantly talking, portending Armageddon. The common currency is doomed to fail. It was soothing the ears of the Greek people, exhausted by the exhortations of the political ineptitude that, with the forefinger of its right hand, pointed at him as the culprit for everything. The alien explained to the people that it was not his fault but the scheme’s. And he was here to expose it.

They did not understand him and made no pretence to understand him. It is widely acknowledged that the chosen nation knows everything and therefore it does not need to strain itself to learn anything. He was distinguished as a magician, whiz, of economy. He spoke good English and it did not take special efforts to charm the boy from school occupations who had no idea of either economy or English. He was the great professor who gave interviews on Skype, even far from Seattle on the West Coast. The famous Alien received the votes of about two hundred thousand Greeks and nobody was surprised when he was given the post of finance minister or rather the fate of the country.

Sunday's report by Xenia Kounalaki in the newspaper Kathimerini convinced me in one thing at least, if in nothing else. Alien is not alien ectoplasm. He is a product of the Greek industry of human characters. He is the other side of the coin of the full-blooded "proud Greek", with whom he shares the traits of arrogance, morbid narcissism and uncontrollable self-confidence. An improved version of the one who believes that he will not suffer in any way even if he is driving in the opposite lane with two hundred km/h. Accidents are for others. And he inspires admiration for that.

The mentality of the lifestyle, the worthy child of which he is, is based on a cynical axiom that secures him the ease with which his wealth has been accumulated. This country does not deserve to take it seriously. It is a game to conquer it, it is a game to govern it, it is just a game. And if the goods cannot sell here, you go further down, to the inexperienced Tsipras who will buy what you sell him, as long as it smells confrontation and swaggering, the motorcycle and the summer evenings in the branch of Mykonos, the historic island of Aegina, being particularly contributive.

We created him, gave him the airs, with awe, admiration and numerous television cameras we followed him passing through the "arrivals/departures" sections at the airport and one day we discovered that he had a plan for economic turnaround. The other one, who still lives in 1917, wanted to rob the mint. He, the child accustomed to spaghetti with lobster, knew it was enough to steal the electronic archive, press a button and have a smartphone application. And yet we wonder if Tsipras was informed or suffered ischemic stroke when the plan was disclosed to him.

Come on, the boy was just fascinated by the perfect product of nouveau-riche culture. He only needs someone to mumble incantations and everything will be fine.
