With a small transistor and a battery taped to his body, Albanian recidivist Alket Rizaj was able to deceive the Greek police for nearly 24 hours that he had half a kilo of C4 type explosive attached to his body. With threats that he would blow himself up he managed to hold six hostages and to blackmail the police for several hours to give him a car by which to escape from the prison in Malandrinou.
The thriller, about which GRReporter has been informing you in detail, passed to the stage of denouement at 8:20 pm on Sunday night, when Rizaj agreed to release three hostages as a result of the efforts of the negotiating experts. A senior officer of the Greek police played a particularly crucial role. He had participated in the two previous captures of Rizaj after his two cinematic escapes from Korydallos by helicopter.
The whole operation was codenamed "Polidevkis." First, the police increased the security of all prisons in Greece with all available resources. They declared a state of emergency in the territory of Phocis, the area where Malandrinou prison is located, and huge police detachments, including police forces with special functions, were concentrated there. Air forces were guarding the skies over the area.
The negotiations with Rizaj started in full cooperation between police, prosecutors and prison staff. At one point, the recidivist said the key words, "Okay, let's finish with this" and surrendered.
