A group of youths wearing black hoods attacked Minister of Finance Yanis Varoufakis, who was having dinner with his wife Danae Stratou in a restaurant in the central Athens district of Exarcheia. According to Varoufakis himself, the young men whose faces were carefully hidden attacked him with insults and accusations, started to break glasses and plates and loudly urged him to leave their area. Exarcheia neighbourhood is a home to numerous anarchist organizations in the Greek capital.

According to Varoufakis himself again, who issued a formal communication about the case, the goal of the attackers was not to hurt him physically because if they wanted they could easily have done so. Two young men were in the restaurant and an even more impressive group supported them outside. Shortly after the quarrel Danae suddenly stood up, hugged her husband, turning her back to the young men, thus protecting him from their attack.

When the couple left the restaurant about 15 minutes later and set off to the motorcycle of the Minister, 6-7 anarchists attacked them again, initiating a fierce verbal duel between them and Yanis Varoufakis. It all ended when the couple left Exarcheia on the motorcycle. It is noteworthy that, at the request of the Minister himself, he is not guarded by officers of the security forces.

This is the first attack of the anarchists against a member of the government of Alexis Tsipras that is generally sympathetic to the ideas of anarchy.
