traffickers, detained, illegal immigrants, border point
On Saturday, the Greek authorities arrested two foreigners while they were trafficking illegal immigrants in Evros.
One is a 52-year-old Bulgarian and the other – a 54-year-old Turk; two separate charges were brought up for smuggling into Greece a total of 34 illegal immigrants, of which 24 Iraqis and 10 Syrians.
The Bulgarian was pulled over on the road between Soufli and Ardanio while driving a Bulgarian-registered vehicle with 23 illegal immigrants on board.
The charges against the Bulgarian also cite a violation of the arms provisions, as two knives, 21 and 29 cm long, were found in the vehicle.
The 54-year-old Turk was trying to enter Greece through the Kipi border point, driving a pickup truck with Turkish registration. The check carried out by border police at Kipi found 11 illegal immigrants hidden on the truck in an apparent attempt to smuggle them into the country.
