A huge collapse in the support for SYRIZA is the result of a poll that the agency ProRata conducted on 25-26 August. The approval for the radical left is just 23% unlike the 36.34% it received in the elections on 25 January 2015. A few days ago another poll also reported a narrowing margin in the support for SYRIZA and New Democracy.
New Democracy still ranks second with 19.5% of support, the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn is third with 6.5% whereas the Communist Party of Greece receives 5% of the vote, PASOK 4.5% and Potami 4%.
As regards the newly established parties, Panagiotis Lafazanis’ Popular Unity enjoys the support of 3.5 percent of voters and Vassilis Leventis’ Union of Centrists 3%. SYRIZA’s coalition partner Independent Greeks remains outside the new parliament with only 2.5% of the vote.
Of course, these rates will significantly change until the election day, as the rate of undecided voters is 25.5% and of those who would not vote 7.5%.
The vast majority of Greeks, 64%, believe that Alexis Tsipras has made a mistake by announcing early elections. An even greater percentage of them, 68%, believe that Greece should remain in the euro zone even if it would mean additional measures and sacrifices. Public opinion seems divided on the third memorandum signed by the government of SYRIZA and Independent Greeks - 48% believe that the government has achieved the best possible agreement with creditors and 45% are of the opposite opinion.
Most respondents have a negative to very negative opinion regarding the actions of Panagiotis Lafazanis who has disaffiliated from SYRIZA, former Minister of Finance Yanis Varoufakis and parliament president Zoe Konstantopoulou, the negative assessments being 50% for Lafazanis, 55% for Konstantopoulou and 32% for Varoufakis.
