Another tragedy of illegal immigrants took place near the island of Farmakonisi in the Aegean Sea in the early hours of Monday. A Greek coast guard ship had detected, at a distance of 1.5 nautical miles from the tiny island, a fishing boat that was not sailing, on board which there were illegal immigrants. The boat had had a mechanical failure and the coast guard cutter had started pulling it to shore. For hitherto unknown reasons, two passengers had fallen from the boat into the sea. The other passengers had quickly gathered in one side of the vessel to see what was happening. As a result, the boat had turned upside down and all the passengers had fallen into the water. The coast guard service was able to rescue 18 people but, according to the immigrants, there had been 12 more on board, who are still missing.
The rescue operation involves a coast guard ship, a rescue boat, a military helicopter and a "Super Puma" helicopter.
