The leader of the main opposition party in Greece, Antonis Samaras, has resigned. This was the result of a wave of reactions inside the party caused by the heavy loss of the positive vote in the referendum.
As it transpired, Dora Bakoyannis called on Samaras to leave the leadership of New Democracy on Saturday. Following the disclosure of this information, today the chairman of New Democracy's youth organisation, Sakis Ioannidis, also urged Samaras to let go of the leader's post. Other party officials also made statements to the same effect.
Antonis Samaras submitted his resignation a few hours after the end of the referendum day. Former parliament speaker Evangelos Meimarakis will be the interim leader of New Democracy.
