In a massive police action arrested were the attackers of the two policemen from the patrol group Dias, Giavis Evagelinelis, age 23 and George Skiloyanis, age 22. The boys lost their lives on March 2 this year after two Russian citizens of Greek origin and two Greeks, who that night robbed a kiosk, shot them with Kalashnikovs. After a two-month investigation police made 11 arrests of members of criminal group which mainly deals with robberies. Among them are the two out of the four suspects in the death of the policemen in early March.
They arrested criminals are immigrants from the former Soviet Union and are 36 and 28 years old. The older of the two is married and a father of two. Both arrested are known to the police, who have criminal records, mostly for series of thefts. The younger of the two suspects has been arrested for possession of illegal weapons, and his name is involved in various skirmishes in recent years.
Authorities carried out five police actions in the western and southeastern parts of the capital. 400 policemen were involved in the successful arrest and in the disclosure of the criminal group. The decisive move was planned for later this year, but police found that the illegal organization was preparing a major strike against a private person, from which they expected a big profit. After that they intended to leave the country.
Police made the arrests after a two-month effort. According to the disclosed information, most helpful were the clues that the criminals have left behind. Some of the most important pieces of evidence were the weapons of attack and the car they used to escape from Athens after the shooting. One suspect was shot by police and left behind blood, which was taken for DNA analysis and police managed to find his identity. He is not among the detainees and right now police are looking for the doctor who helped him to recover, so they can arrest him. Authorities have gained significant evidence telephone conversation records between members of the criminal group, in which addressed are both murders in Redi and other planned actions.
According to Skai, the detainees are part of a criminal group that is structured very well. Accusations were made to all 11 detainees and the Greek media comments charges were pressed from half of the Penal Code, including murder, robbery, extortion, etc. At this point there is no information whether the criminal group has connection with the anarchist and terrorist circles in Greece, but suspicions that the underworld helps the attacks of the anarchists and nihilists remain.
