In a routine check of a parked silver-coloured car, the police found in its boot a man wrapped with a hand-made explosive device. The car was parked outside the Jumbo shop in the Tavros neighbourhood. When found, the man managed to escape from the police, ran to the shop, which was just about to open at 10 o’clock on Monday morning and threatened to detonate himself. Employees of the company managed to escape through the service entrance of the building. Police officers from the rapid reaction unit DIAS entered the building from the same entrance and managed to capture the man.
It turned out that he was an old acquaintance of theirs - Kostas Samaras wanted for thefts, robberies and other crimes and a close associate of the brothers Nikos and Vassilis Paleokostas. Samaras is on 20 years probation and is required to appear in the local police department on each first and fifteenth day every month, but has long forgotten about this obligation. That is why he has been wanted by the police. Ultimately, it was found that the prisoner had no explosives, only empty cans, hoses, plugs, a clock and a device with a button.
Kostas Samaras, aged 55, is considered the "brain" behind the Paleokostas brothers' robberies. He himself has escaped from prison five times and made the same number of unsuccessful escape attempts. He is the author of the novel "Wanted," which describes his own experience as a fugitive.
